Keep A Breast Foundation
The Keep A Breast Foundation (KAB) was founded in 2000 by Shaney jo Darden and Mona Mukherjia-Gehrig to emphasize a key element of breast cancer advocacy that remains often overlooked, even today: prevention and early detection. The 501(c)3 organization takes a radically different approach to breast cancer advocacy, infusing creative expression and community-building with an against-the-status-quo ethos to spur its mission: to reduce breast cancer risk and its impact globally through art, education, prevention, and action.
Starting as a grassroots effort to spark important conversations and action through the never-before-seen breast cast art exhibitions bringing together KAB’s action sports, art and fashion community, KAB evolved into a pioneering nonprofit dedicated to empowering young people to be their own health advocates through lifesaving resources that educate on chest self-checks and why it’s important to #knowyournormal when it comes to your breast health baseline.
Today, KAB operates worldwide, with branches in the U.S. and Europe, plus affiliates in Mexico and Africa. Its trilingual self-check app has reached over 55,000 people and counting across the globe, while more than 10 million “i love boobies!” bracelets sold to support the foundation have helped normalize breast health advocacy since 2004.
Keep A Breast continues to challenge the status quo, promoting prevention as the cure and using art to drive action.
