Paying homage to the town of the same name, "El Rito Nights" is is inspired by the desert landscape and cultural heritage of Northern New Mexico. Like much of Jess' work, this design paints a bold, rugged portrait of a quintessentially Western scene. In keeping with American western mythology, the scene blends beauty with danger, life with death, and natural order with human absurdity.

The wind-worn, sun-bleached color scheme highlights these contrasting ideas brilliantly. Together the elements create a larger, almost cinematic world within what might otherwise be innocuous artifacts. The scene belies Jess' reverence for the West in legend and reality.

Artist Jess Mudgett was born in Fort Collins, Colorado. Growing up with a Father who taught US History, he was surrounded by, and fascinated with, history, antiques, and native objects from the American West. This fascination inspires his life and work to this day. In Jess' early career, he decided to leave the 9-5 world of designing for outdoor and skateboard companies to pursue a life as a ranch hand. Starting completely green and inexperienced, it took years of learning through "the hard way" for him to get the hang of ranch handing. However, as Jess explained "It’s the most rewarding work I have ever done. Most importantly, it feeds my soul and gives me immense inspiration for my painting and design work." His work keeps him on the road for long stretches, traversing the Western U.S. in his truck creating murals and hand painted designs for a broad range of companies and individuals.
