Fahrenno's bandana depicts his favorite coastal location on his island of Yogyakarta in Indonesia. The image in the design replicates (and inverts) the view from Parangtritis Beach, looking toward Merapi Mountain - an active volcano. The beach itself is steeped in local mythology, and is said to be a place to meet the legendary Nyai Loro Kidul or "Queen of the Southern Sea."

Locals warn visitors against wearing green on this beach, or the queen is likely to try to entice the wearer into the ocean to drown. Fahrenno's inversion of the image (along with it's not-quite-green color) reflects the mysterious and somewhat dangerous tone of these local myths, while still letting the natural beauty of this coastal location shine.

Fahrenno Asnawan is an illustrator and graphic designer based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. His badge, logo, typeface, and merchandise designs have been featured by well-known brands across the world including Sendero Provisions, Iron & Resin, REI, and more. Fahrenno formally studied visual communication design in school, but told us that most of his work is inspired by his community in Yogyakarta, the work of graphic designer M. Beirut, and vintage items and assets in his own family's archive. His work has a signature "lived in" or "weathered" aesthetic that many designers attempt, but few have executed as well as Fahrenno. As a brand that traces our own origins back to time spent in Indonesia, we're proud to feature this incredible Indonesian artist!

Walhi Indonesia

The Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI) is the largest environmental movement organization in Indonesia. From 1980 until now, WALHI has actively encouraged efforts to save and restore Indonesia's environment. WALHI continues to push for the recognition of environmental rights and the protection and fulfillment of human rights as a form of state responsibility for fulfilling people's sources of life.

In the middle of an intense struggle to save the environment and people's livelihoods, a strong and broad social movement is needed to fight for economic, social, and ecological justice for our present and future generations. WALHI ensures itself to be a significant part of this movement.

Fahrenno chose to support Walhi because, as he explained, "In my location, especially in Yogyakarta, there are so many investors and developers that are destroying the natural environment." Fahrenno hopes that this bandana, and the support it generates for Walhi, can be part of a larger effort to protect and appreciate the natural environment of Yogyakarta.
