Sam's bandana is inspired by his experiences enjoying the local geography in his hometown of Austin, Texas. Specifically, Sam pays homage to kayaking the "Greenbelt" with friends. The "Greenbelt" refers to the local 12-mile system of hiking trails, waterways, limestone cliffs, and springs around Barton Creek in Austin, including the famous Barton Springs natural swimming pool.

In addition to being a go-to destination for hiking, biking, swimming, and rock-climbing, the Greenbelt serves as a point of public pride for the City of Austin. Sam's design evokes the multi-faceted appeal of the Greenbelt with his ode to the many waterfalls along this stretch of the creek, along with local flora and fauna featured in each corner. The rich colors mimic those of the Greenbelt during Fall, when Austin shakes off the summer heat and truly comes alive.

Sam is the driving force behind the Austin-based design and creative studio SAMPLE. The studio focuses on identity, packaging, apparel, and collateral for local brands including YETI, Criquet, Shiner, Whataburger, and NadaMoo! (among many others). Sam's work has a cheeky personality and delightfully nostalgic quality that harkens back to design elements from an era when design knew how to have more fun. In describing his artistic influences, Sam told us, "I love anything old, particularly from a time when things were done by hand – you can pick up on the beautiful inconsistencies and the artist's hand." Sam was born in Brooklyn, but moved with his family to Austin at the age of 3. His photographer father introduced him to the Austin art scene at an early age, and inspired his evolution in the world of design and branding. However, it wasn't until after his college years at Baylor University until he taught himself design programs and truly dove into his design career. After landing and internship and an eventual full-time role at a local design agency, Sam struck out on his own and started SAMPLE in 2020.

Keep Austin Beautiful

Founded in 1983 by Austin Mayor Ron Mullen, Keep Austin Beautiful (KAB) works tirelessly for almost half of a century to ensure that the Austin community stays safe, clean, and beautiful. As lifelong stewards of Austin’s green spaces and waterways, KAB promotes continued education, growth, and learning about the local environment, as well as a passion for keeping Austin clean, safe, and usable.

Through programs like Adopt-a-Creek, Community Cleanups, and Keep Austin Beautiful Day, the organization inspires and educates all Austinites to volunteer together, beautify green spaces, clean waterways, and reduce waste every day. As an Austinite himself, Sam chose Keep Austin Beautiful in order to give back to his local community and environment through his work.
