Drawing on inspiration from vintage cartoons from the 30's, 40's, and 50's, Lauren's detailed type and illustration style adds depth to the visual puns throughout her "Camp Phibian" bandana design. For our CAMP BANDITS collection, LA-based designer Lauren Griffin used some good ol' fashioned wordplay to pay homage to playful camp memories from her childhood. Diving into the double meaning of the word "Camp," Lauren's design dials up the kitsch with fun-loving frogs enjoying her Summer camp staples.

One particular piece of inspiration was a 12th birthday camping trip Lauren took with her family in Northern California. Before turning in on the first night, remains of pizza and birthday cake that her parents brought along for the celebration were stashed in a bear locker far from their tents. In the middle of the night, though, the locker proved no match for the local bears. Lauren's (admittedly scared) family woke up to a raucous "Bear-th Day party" and luckily walked away with just a story to tell.

Lauren is a Los Angeles based illustrator, graphic designer and self-described "southern gentlewoman with a soft spot for vintage letterforms and illustration styles". Her playfully detailed, vintage-inspired style draws on signage, found objects, her camera roll, reference lettering books, and her design contemporaries on social media (algorithms be damned!). She has a great love for old signage, particularly those that incorporate neon, and she even has a few neon signs up around LA that she designed. One of her pieces, in fact, is on permanent display at the Museum of Neon Art and another is a whopping 9-footer over a bar in Little Tokyo (Wolf & Crane). These pieces are a great source of pride for Lauren, and a tangible representation of the artistic impact she's leaving on Los Angeles. Lastly, in keeping with the CAMP BANDITS theme, Lauren told us that if she could camp anywhere in the world - it would be in New Zealand. With a beer in hand, she'd pull a Bilbo Baggins and live out her Lord of the Rings fantasy in lush landscapes with mountain views. We're honored to work with Lauren for the second time ("Bioluminescense" bandana for BANDITS x REI) and can't wait to see how she'll leave her mark on LA (and the world) in the future.

The Brigid Alliance

For many Americans, the costs and logistical challenges of getting to an abortion provider are primary barriers to access, and it’s only getting harder. The Brigid Alliance coordinates and pays for travel, expenses, and child care, serving as a single, trusted point of contact for every step of the journey. Wherever someone needs to get to abortion care in the U.S., The Brigid Alliance finds a way to get them there – through direct support and in collaboration with our network of partners.

As to why she chose to support The Brigid Alliance, Lauren explained "With the recent and frankly abhorrent restrictions our government has passed in response to the overturning of of Roe v. Wade, these services are more important than ever."
