When considering his design for our Creature Collection, Nicolás immediately thought of Cryptids - or mythical animals that may exist somewhere in the wild, but whose present existence is disputed or unsubstantiated by science. Having long been a fan and admirer of Cryptids, Nicolás was excited to feature some of his favorites in his "Creatures of the Night" design. Specifically, Nicolas features cryptids that are tied by their nocturnal nature and their cliche'd and disputed "sightings" by humans.

Beyond a basic curiosity, Nicolás explores what Sasquatch, the Chupacabra, the Jackalope, and aliens say about US. Since they all act in the dark, he believes that they represent the unknown and what we fear about ourselves. The things we're afraid to "see" or "shine a light on," or that we're unsure of. We interpret these internal fears and collectively manifest them into shared cultural and ancestral experience. The crytids give form to the thing we all fear the most, our own human vulnerability.

Nicolás Crespo is an graphic designer and illustrator based in Medellin, Colombia. His colorful creations have graced album covers, packaging, and branding for customer across the world. His signature style is characterized by a blend of bold color, vintage aesthetic, and a sprinkling of light-hearted fun that makes his designs sine with festive energy. When we asked Nicolás about his artistic influences, he told us, " I've had different periods where different things have permeated my work quite strongly, but I think what has lingered the most over the years are old memories of motorbikes, old American camp badges, old matchboxes, the nature around me and the deserts of the United States, which is my favorite landscape in the world." He also cited as influences many of the artists who've created bandanas for BANDITS - Brett Stenson, Joshua Noom, Alana Louise, Zaine Vaun, Brothers Design Co., and Land & She. We've been fans of Nicolás' work for a while and we're so excited to finally work with him on this incredible bandana design.

Cartagena Paws

Cartagena Paws is a non-profit organization dedicated to animal rescue, spay, neuter, and vaccination operations in Colombia. Their mission is to foster a deeper understanding of animal rights and welfare, and to change the lives of animals in Colombia by changing the culture of animal abuse, neglect, and trafficking.

They conduct large-scale mission trips to Colombia that focus on spay/neuter clinics along with educational programs for the youth and adults of the local communities. They have successfully re-homed nearly 300 dogs and cats, and through their programs have helped to reduce animal starvation and neglect that is widespread in the country.

Explaining why he chose Cartagena paws to support, Nicolas told us "Because I love animals and natural life, I believe that as humans we have a responsibility to protect our fauna and flora. I have a dog that I love and I am grateful every day for his presence in my life. This makes me want to provide that same love and connection to as many animals as possible."
