"Seasons"

Alex Barnes is graphic designer, illustrator, photographer, and fine artist based in Dana Point, CA and working as an in-house t-shirt designer/ illustrator at Vissla. A native of North Florida, Alex studied art and graphic design at Flagler College in Saint Augustine, FL, where he began developing his signature, vintage-inspired style.

Alex cites contemporary designers like Josh Noom and George Greaves as influences for the "Seasons" design, which was chosen by the BANDITS fanbase as one of the four winners of our "Summer Series" design contest in March 2019.

After discovering a cool shop in San Clemente with a massive collection of tiki mugs, Alex's curiosity was piqued and he started sketching. He had been practicing drawing facial expressions and learning to draw faces from memory, so  the different emotions and characters present in the tiki mugs provided the perfect subject material for a Summer-themed design. After some experimentation, Alex landed on the 4 tikis placed symmetrically together, creating this intriguing Summer Series design.

The Honolulu Museum of Art is Hawai‘i's culture hub with two museums, an art school, a theater and two cafés. Founded in 1922, their mission has been to create relevant and transformative experiences through the study, preservation, presentation and creation of art. The museum’s permanent collection has grown from 500 works to more than 50,000 pieces spanning 5,000 years, with significant holdings in Asian art, American and European painting and decorative arts, 19th- and 20th-century art, an extensive collection of works on paper, Asian textiles, and traditional works from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas.

Given his use of the tiki faces and symbology, Alex chose to support the museum with his design because it felt like an appropriate way to help give back the Hawaiian culture and heritage.
