Alan told us that his favorite place to watch the sunset is aboard a boat, beer in hand, fishing on the Parana river in his native Argentina. That experience inspires “Carnada Viva” (or “Live Bait” in English), which draws on the mythology of the river and the tropical forest that surrounds it.

Alan’s design, and much of his work, emulates the hand-painted billboards of the bait shops that dot the river valley. The bright colors, the tactile feelings, and the generations of stories conveyed by these signs are evident in Alan’s work, and make it shine with a unmatched vibrant energy that is quintessentially Argentinian.

Alan Berry Rhys

Alan Berry Rhys is a graphic artist and illustrator based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His distinctive style is inspired by vintage graphic advertising, particularly the hand painted signboards that dot the rural landscapes of Argentina. His bold, brightly colored designs evoke these classic, low-quality printing methods and Alan's self-proclaimed "search for a simpler life." In addition to hand-rendered sign painting, Alan largely works with techniques derived from screen printing and risograph-making, imbuing his designs with the errors and imperfections and giving them their unique feel. Thanks to this uncompromising dedication to technique, Alan's work leaps off the page with life, humanity, and emotion. Alan's work has been featured in campaigns and products for brands such as Jack Daniel's, Absolut Vodka, Nike, Puma, Vans, and Oreo, among others. Alan is also Professor of Graphic Design at Buenos Aires University, where he has taught for 8 years.

MUNDO APARTE ROSARIO

Started in 2001 Mundo Aparte is a non-profit park dedicated exclusively to protecting and rehabilitating endangered, abused, sick, or injured wild animals. The organization also works to fight ecological injustice, and contributes to raising greater environmental awareness in Argentina and across the world.

In a context where there is increasing social disapproval of zoos, this animal shelter represents a more than striking alternative. Unlike traditional zoos, Mundo Aparte only receives animals that are endangered or in poor health. All of them, once recovered, are returned to their natural habitats. So their stay is always intended to be temporary.
