This bandana is a variation on the first-ever JXTA flag, which Odis designed and which flies on the Northeast corner of the skate-able art plaza on JXTA's campus (scroll to the third image to see the flag). Reflecting on the inspiration for the design, Odis explained, “Originally the flag design was meant to reflect and celebrate the Northside community with JXTA at the heart. The inspiration came from researching the imagery of the Black Panther Party while tying in the colors of the Pan-African flag.” Created by Odis along with other youth apprentices and teaching artists in the Tactical and Textiles & Screen Printing labs, it was proudly raised above the campus shortly after the police killing of George Floyd.

In the subsequent unrest that rocked the North Minneapolis neighborhood after news of the killing spread, JXTA's building was broken into and sustained significant damage. In their words, the team behind the flag explained that it came to represent "the community standing together in solidarity, strength, historic resilience, and resistance to oppressive systems.” BANDITS is honored to bring this wearable version of the JXTA flag to life, allowing you to join us in supporting their mission. However you style it, you'll be showing the world that you stand for social justice, equality, and empowerment of the next generation of young artists.

He is in his fourth year as an apprentice at Juxtaposition Arts in the Textiles & Screen Printing Lab. With diverse influences including the language of universal design through Unicode and the artless transparency of Jean-Michel Basquiat, his designs are controversially urban in aesthetic, abstractly simple in composition, and thought-provoking in expression. He works mainly in mixed media such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Xerox, and collage.

Juxtaposition Arts (North Minneapolis, MN)

100% OF PROCEEDS donated to Juxtaposition Arts (JXTA) - the only Black-led art and design organization in North Minneapolis and a pillar in the Twin Cities creative economy. JXTA empowers young people in their community by preparing them for careers in art and design, and helping them to create pathways to self-sufficiency. JXTA invests in the long game to build social and economic justice by offering not only training, but also employment opportunities to young urban artists.

JXTA's North Minneapolis campus includes a design center, gallery, retail shop, artists’ studio space, and a skate-able art plaza. Their teaching artists provide young apprentices hands-on education in graphic design, textile and screen printing, environmental design, public art and murals, and other creative services. Teachers and apprentices work together to create commissioned works, giving the young artists valuable real-world experience working within the world of clients, deadlines, and contracts. JXTA also offers their artists the opportunity to sell products derived from their work via their physical and online retail portals.

2020 marked JXTA's 25th anniversary and two years into a four-year, $14 million capital and legacy campaign to invest in facilities, programming, and the creative futures of youth in North Minneapolis. BANDITS is proud to commit 100% OF PROCEEDS from this bandana to JXTA's Capital Campaign, supporting arts education and employment for young people for generations to come.
